Names to the moon (LRO)

NASA are sending people’s names, entered on the LRO “Name To Moon”website (http://lro.jhuapl.edu/NameToMoon/index.php), in a chip with the LRO mission to the moon.

It has been extended a few times – the last extension was till July 31 2008.

See http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/news/nametomoon2.html for an older article and http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/253242main_moon_cert_lg.jpg for an example of the certificate generated.

My oldest daughter loves that her name is going to space – it has been a real catalyst for her interest in space and astronomy – well as much as a 2.5 year old can show interest in such things ;) – she watches Jim Henson’s “Bear in the Big Blue House” so she has her own ideas about the moon (“Lunar” in this program talks etc) and is tickled that this is a way of saying hi to her.

This has also really helped me focus some activities for my eldest daughter. One thing I did was to put some glow in the dark stars, moon and planets etc up on her ceiling (she loves these) – and then I put both her’s and my youngest daughter’s names up in stick-on lettering in the sky. This is what she points to when she wants to talk about it more etc and it has helped her understand that it is (for now :) ) her name going up.
