The thing about warranties is…

you sometimes need them!

I noticed some machine check warnings “Machine Check Event reported is a memory hierarchy error” in the event log on my freshly modded notebook. They’d been occurring since I first purchased the unit:

Machine Check Event

As far as I could tell using the AMD tool, it looked like there was something wrong with the cache on the CPU – but who knows, it could have been just a side effect of the BIOS routines on POST as they only occurred on a cold boot.

The annoying thing is that since I’d taken a dremel to my notebook in the process of upgrading the graphics, the warranty was well and truely voided!

I looked at display models of the same notebook around town and they all had the same MCE being rasied. After running prolonged memory tests and hammering my unit with all kinds of CPU stress tests I decided to ignore them – I wasn’t experiencing any problems aside from a little clutter in the event log – but its not like I had a choice.
