I have a lot of domains around the place – and with each domain I have email accounts. I even still have an ISP email address I picked up 15 years ago when I didn’t know any better. I get enough spam on any given account that I regularly need to download my email during the day or I risk running over the storage limits I have.
I’m also a bit sick of buying yet another machine and working out how to transfer mail from my old machine. And needless to say I tend to have a few old machines sitting around the place – but not entirely decommissioned – so I can’t just install Linux and do something useful with it.
Enter hMailServer (for Windows) and its external email downloading capabilities, any old IMAP capable email client and an underclocked laptop running 24/7 with Apache/PHP installed for remote admin. As I’m running Windows XP SP2 on the laptop, I also scheduled a nightly reboot in the task scheduler (start->run: control schedtasks).
